Port Glasgow Juniors 2 - 1 Greenock Juniors
Beatons Sectional League Cup
Greenock's interest in this years Beatons Sectional League Cup ended at the hands of their biggest rivals after a narrow 2-1 defeat. Danny Gault's team were depleted with injuries and suspensions to key players so it was up to the starting eleven to deliver the goods a task in which they failed to do. Taking nothing away from Heron's troop's who looked the hungrier over the 90 minutes and deservedly merited their win. This was always going to be a tough encounter for both teams with the 'monsoon weather' playing havoc to the Ravenscraig pitch robbing the Greenock select of their usual slick passing game. McIntyre was first to test Port's Jackson with a long range effort as did Barnes with neither troubling the keeper that much. The first goal arrived after some slack play by Greenock's Threlfall as his weak clearance fell kindly to Walker who feed Scott Nugent to calmly score into an empty net. Barnes and Robertson were both having off days on either wing with their poor crossing and passing, with Port's Temporal and Walton playing well at the back.
Half-time 1 - 0
Port Glasgow started the second half the way they left off pinning the Greenock defence back without causing that much trouble on Threlfall's goal. With Port's Stewart dominating the midfield and Beckley excelling on the right it was inevitable that they would race into a two goal lead. Monaghan sinned for Greenock, and Bowie should have equalised but the ref blew for offside. The second goal arrived on the 70th minute as Walton floated a cross to the back post Tam Jamieson was first to react and send his looping effort high over Threlfall and into the back of the net. With time now against Greenock and looking as though they would never score up popped Aldo McIntyre as he neatly turned and struck his left foot shot past Jackson for 2-1. Greenock went in search for the equaliser but just couldn't break down Port's rearguard and at that the ref blew for full time.
