Greenock left Fullerton Park reeling after they thought they had done enough for at least a share of the spoils. Straight from the Kick off Greenock went in search of an early goal with Power forcing a fine save from Wilson anbd firing over the bar albeit from a tight angle and on his weaker side. The home team had little response and as half time approached the best chance was squandered when Docherty ghosted in a the back to get on the end of a McAllister crossfield pass but sent his effort wide of the target.

The second half started as the first finished with Greenock on the offensive. An injury to Monaghan on 58 mins allowed Robertson to enter the fray and right away set out to attack the Vale goal. On the hour mark Dow had the ball in the Vale net only to see it disallowed for offside. Against the run of play vale took the lead when a corner from the right hand side was met by Ross looped into the far post of Monk's leaving him with no chance. With only 12 minutes left on the clock Greenock pushed for an equaliser but only stout defending and excellent goalkeeping stopped Greenock getting the goal that would have brought them there deserved share of the points.
