Greenock left Millburn Park reeling after losing four goals and having two men red carded after making a promising start. Again Greenock's finishing let them down as they squandered numerous effort's in front of goal. Docherty was first to test the keeper but was unlucky with his shot after some good build up play by Lappin & Power. McIntyre then saw his shot sail just wide off the upright. Threlfall was forced into action on the half hour mark pulling off a fine save to deny Vale's Ward from scoring. Vale's Rogers then pulled off the save of the match from Lappin after his perfectly struck volley seemed goalbound until Rogers somehow managed to palm it round the post for a corner, from the resulting corner the ball fell neatly to Docherty's feet his strike at the second attempt was smothered by Roger's.

Half-time 0 - 0

Right from the kick off a nicely waited pass from McMillan found Black but his half volley cleared Rodger's upright. Then 10 minutes later the traveling Greenock support where screaming for a penalty as Black took a tumble in the box but the referee waved away any claims, Black's one-two with Monaghan result's in Black firing over. McAllister and Barnes were soaking up all pressure at the back with McMillan winning his share of the ariel duals. Monaghan looked to have put his team mates 1 up after McIntyre's shot fell nicely to his feet but his shot was smothered by Rodger's. The first goal of the game arrived in 64 minutes from a free-kick, the ball was swung in from Brown and Alex Grace was on hand to header past Threlfall at the near post. A minute later Greenock were reduced to 10 men, as Black tried to run McBride his jersey was being pulled as he stopped he swung a leg, the referee deemed this as violent conduct and sent Black for an early bath as well as booking McBride. Then a crazy 7 minute spell for Greenock put this tie well out of their reach as Vale scored a further 3 goals. Barnes weak back pass was intercepted by Grace who scored his second of the match. The 3rd arrived 4 minutes later as Brian Wardle rose highest to head past Threlfall from 6 yards. Greenock's misery was complete with 12 minute's remaining as Ross McMillan joined Black for a late tackle thus resulting in a penalty in which Hugh Ward dispatched with ease.
